That day will be forever branded in my memory. I was driving along minding my own business when my car just died and refused to start.

It was getting close to dusk, I was on a main street at a light and was in the middle of turning left with traffic coming straight at me when my car died. Turning the key off and then trying to restart it didn’t work and I had to move fast. Thankfully I was on an incline and the car just rolled, albeit slowly but slow was still fast enough to get out of the way of the oncoming vehicles.

On the right was a parking lot so I held my breath and finally rolled into a parking spot unscathed. I figured I had nothing to lose so tried to start the engine again but it was just dead.

After contacting three different mechanics which gave me three completely different solutions, I was just confused. The three scenarios were: the starter went out, the alternator would need to be replaced and the third was just to rebuild the entire engine. As you can see, each of these were unrelated and would have very different price estimates.

So I went to Google to see what I could find out on my own. I was very surprised to find out that this was a common occurrence for the model of car I owned. The culprit was a computerized part that had already been recalled. I decided that it my lucky day for this to happen the way it did without anyone getting hurt including my car.

So, what can a person do to eliminate automobile situations from occurring? Here’s some tips for you:

* When you are considering the purchase of a vehicle – whether new or used – spend the time to research it to find out any flaws and also any good things about the make and model. Read reviews online to hear what others have to say about it.

* If you don’t already have a reliable mechanic, interview a few until you feel comfortable or get referrals from people you trust.

* Once you have found a good mechanic shop, stick with it. This will eliminate the different, confusing responses about what is wrong with your vehicle and what it will take to repair it. Also, you will get the warnings ahead of time of what needs to be repaired, you’ll get the maintenance when you need it and you may even get discounts.

Follow the above and make your road trips – whether local or long distance – enjoyable ones.

Everyone takes their car to the mechanic to get maintenance done at regular intervals, and most aren’t happy about the price they have to pay for the parts. Shopping for online parts can reduce the cost in the maintenance of your car and allow you to save on the total charge. These parts are oftentimes just as good as the ones that they have in the shops, but relatively cheaper.

In many cases the online parts you find are the same makes and models, just sold at their normal prices. Most mechanics will overcharge for their parts and services in order to make money. You keep coming back to them because they stay relatively cheaper than the dealership, but more expensive than they need to be. I say most mechanics because there are a few good ones out there.

There are usually three things to look for when looking for a good mechanic. First off is the eagerness to bring your car in and take a look at it. If the mechanic seems too eager to bring it in and look under the hood then you know he might be “expecting” to find a problem. Most good ones will talk with you a bit to determine what the problem might be before looking at it.

The next thing that you should check is the awards that they have garnered from local establishments and organization. Although big and flashy national awards are quite an achievement, you need to par attention to the local ones. This attests that they have been able to deliver to the community and have attained their trust. The last thing that you should take regard is how much they will charge whet you ask them to give you an estimate.

Them good mechanics would be glad to break the expenses down for you and would be glad to give you the prices to cechk them out yourself. Most petty mechanics just want to cash in money from you and will be offended when you ask them to break it down, telling you to go somewhere else if you distrust them. The good mechanics would not mind working with you even if you buy online parts yourself. They would be glad to install anything as long as you them for their services.

There are often good used deals that you could find online, depending on the parts that you are looking for. Spark plugs and parts as such, you definitely would want brand new. But gas tanks and oil pans could still stay in service for a long time. All of these deals will depend on what you need and when you need it.

Shopping for parts online can sometimes take plenty of time. If your car near vintage status, there may not be anything available due to lack of spare. Discontinued products, however, can be replaced by third party replacement parts. In most cases, finding parts such as these may require a lot of patience from you.

Disabled versions of your model are another source of spares. However, the quality of these parts is suspect because they might have been damaged in the wreck. Unfortunately, in most cases, your choices go from one to none. If you love your car you do the necessary things needed to keep it running.
